The story

Why Nila is free

I'm a father of two teenagers: a boy and a girl. When I first heard about period apps I was shocked, and I started digging. A lot of teenagers don't want to spend money on an app, so they end up with the free ones. And those earn their money elsewhere: from ads, and from data.

The further I looked, the less sure I was that the data was in good hands. When you have your period is nobody else's business. In my spare time I like making things, so I built Nila myself: no account, no ads, and nothing that leaves your phone.

Nila is free and it stays that way. There will be no paid version. I don't want to earn anything from it, and there's nothing to earn either: what you enter stays on your phone. It's there for anyone who wants to use it.

How it is built

Four things you can check yourself

Nila is not online

The app does not connect to the internet. There is no account and nothing to log in to.

Nobody tracks you

No ads, no cookies, nothing watching along. This page loads nothing from anyone else either.

Locked with your phone

What you enter sits in a file only Nila can open, and it locks the moment your phone locks.

Backup is off

By default everything stays out of your phone's backup. You turn that on, or not.

Things you might want to know

Tap a question for the answer. The first three are about who can see it, then come money, phones and whether this is medical.

Can anyone else see what I enter?

No. Nila sends nothing and never connects to the internet. What you enter is only on your phone, and iOS encrypts it whenever your phone is locked.

Can people tell what it is from my phone?

Not really. The icon is a small n with a little flower, and the name is just Nila. Nothing pops up on your screen. Only someone who opens the app sees what it is.

Will I get notifications?

No. Nila never sends a notification. You open the app when you want to.

Is it really free?

Yes. No trial, no premium, no ads, and there will be no paid version. There is also nothing to earn from you: what you enter stays on your phone and goes nowhere. You are not the product.

What if I get a new phone?

By default your data does not come along, and it is gone if you delete the app. If you want to keep it, turn on Backup inside Nila. Then it travels in your phone's normal backup.

Is Nila a medical app?

No. A prediction is an estimate. In the first years a cycle is often irregular, and that is normal. If you are in pain or worried, see a doctor.

Can I see the code?

Yes, just ask at dirk@nila-app.nl and I will send it. The code is not public yet, but there is nothing to hide. You can then read exactly what the app does.

Which phones?

iPhone with iOS 17 or later. Nila comes in Dutch and English and follows your phone's language.
